Universidade da Luta (UDL), or in English "University of Fighting" was founded by brothers Mauricio Rua and Murilo Rua after their departure from Chute Boxe Academy.Originally UDL was slated to launch in Massachusetts. However, it was eventually decided to open in Curitiba, Brazil, the hometown of the Rua brothers. During the later stages of preparation the brothers Andre Amade and Mauricio Veio were invited to share ownership which they accepted and converted their gym in Toronto,Canada to a UDL gym. The gym was opened and the first day consisted of an open class, open to the public as well as the press.
The academy also offers facilities for professional athletes looking for opportunities in events both national and international. Many members already compete in promotions such as UFC, Elite XC and DREAM. Wanderlei Silva has recently joined the UDL, although he only utilises the academy when he is visiting Brazil.
